Catch of the Day Reels in Happy Hour Crowds
The Place: Catch of the Day
1050 NW 42nd Ave., Miami
The Hours: daily, 3-7 p.m.
The Deals: Ninety cent draft beers, $2.99 for well drinks and wine by the glass and half off Mojitos and select cocktails.
The Scene: Admittedly, when you're looking for some fresh seafood and a cool coastal breeze as part of your happy hour your first thought might not lead you to the landlocked locale at LeJeune Road and NW 10th Street ( a couple blocks south of the airport and across the street from the Miami Princess Motel). But it should. Catch of the Day has been an institution a stone's throw away from the Dolphin Expressway for what seems like decades.
The Gulf oil spill temporarily (don't know how long) curtailed the fifty cent oyster happy hour special but you can still get 90 cent draft beers and two for one Mojitos. Order a pitcher of Presidente and get free wings or Caribbean Nachos. It's enough to make you forget you are sitting yards away from some of the worst traffic congestion in the country. So what if that wind you are feeling is more likely to be jet thrust or auto emissions than a coastal breeze. No happy hour is perfect.
Conclusion: The inside of Catch of the Day is a little cramped but the outdoor area, which features live music on most nights, has ample additional seating for happy hour crowds. The decorations, including a ship-wrecked boat on its side just off LeJeune Road, are campy but the vibe is legit and the food is tasty.
