9. Creamy Polenta at Scarpetta
The price seems steep, but the name says, "I'm worth it." Scarpetta's extremely creamy cornmeal ($16) is fluffy and rich, with a smooth consistency that doesn't want for texture. Served with a "fricassee" of truffled up mushrooms on the side, the first step is spooning the mixture on top; the polenta takes on the exotic fragrance of the shroomy aroma very well. They use a variety of wild mushrooms -- everything from chanterelles to shiitakes gets thrown into that little pot of condensed flavor. The gravy is neither too thick nor too thin, more like a mushroom jus with a beefy backbone. It's a show stealer masquerading as a side dish.
