Books & Books' vegan "chicken" curry --- almost too good to be true.
24. Vegan Curried "Chicken" Salad at Books & Books
Characteristic of the forward-thinking bookstore, Books & Books' Cafe has added a number of vegan-friendly dishes to its fresh and healthy menu. The tofu wrap ranks close behind, but this plate really takes the (dairy-free, egg-free) cake. The "chicken" tastes so close to the real thing, a non-vegan at the table expressed major doubts that it wasn't cut from the bird. Only upon slicing a chunk open to examine a cross section of what appears to be a wheat gluten-based faux meat was he satisfied that we hadn't ordered wrong. Coated in a slightly sweet yellow curry and mixed in with walnuts and golden raisins, the "chicken" is plated with a room temperature vinaigrette-flavored cous-cous, and a colorful field green salad drizzled with a tangy honey mustard dressing. Our omnivorous friend, upon sampling the plate, actually blurted, "That food is delicious," looking, could it be enviously?? over his plate of ceviche.
