10 Adorable British Foodisms We Should All Adopt
Much like Parks & Recreation's illustrious Tom Haverford, the Brits have all kinds of adorable terminology for their daily eats. OK, so maybe they beat him to the name game by like, 400 years, but either way, phrases like "bangers" (British) and "chicky chicky parm parm" (Tom-ish) are hard not to love.
And honestly, couldn't we use a little more cuteness when it comes to our edibles? Cute nicknames make everything taste better. Here are the top ten uber-adorable terms I've picked up on my travels around the British isles. Plus, now you'll know what Harry Potter means when he talks about treacle tarts.
10. Jacket potatoes.
Baked potatoes. A potato wearing a jacket -- adorbs! And inside that cozy brown overcoat, there's a pillowy mound of sour cream, cheese and chives. Commence drooling.
The word sausages is so blasé. Bangers are so much more fun. Plus, since we're eternally immature, it's endlessly entertaining as far as potential sexual references go.
This term refers to a civilized drink, aka cocktail. We can totally picture the Queen Mum having an afternoon tipple or ten to deal with the pressures of royal life.
A mash-up of scrumptious and yummy. Two awesome words on their own; their marriage is even more amazing. Scrummy biscuits! Scrummy curry! Scrummy David Beckham!
French fries sounds so McDonald's-esque. Wouldn't you rather eat piping hot, just-from-the-fryer chips? With vinegar, preferably. In a paper cone. On the steps of Trafalgar Square. Swoon.
5. Bubble and squeak.
You'll find this traditional British side dish on most menus, and isn't it the best name EVER? Basically, it's a leftover conglomeration of mash (mashed potatoes), cabbage and other various veggies, but really, bubble and squeak sounds so much more enticing.
Panini! A TOASTY! How utterly charming! It's like a sammie version of a Snuggie.
Molasses is hard to swallow whatever it's called, but treacle somehow makes this thick brown stuff sound far more appealing. Plus, it reminds us of Harry Potter, and that's a welcome entrance into fantasyland any day.
Cupcakes are the stuff of Gods, so we wouldn't be surprised if little fairies were hard at work baking these heavenly treats every night. Fairies with charming British accents and bad teeth.
1. Fish Fingers.
Fish sticks! Duh, fish don't have fingers, but that's what makes it cute. Plus, Doctor Who nerds will forever love this reference.
