  • Ultra Music Festival Announces Phase Two of Its Lineup

Ultra Music Festival released the second phase of its lineup, and while the biggest names in the list offer no big surprises, a number of other, smaller acts added to the bill demonstrate more of the festival's forward-thinking approach this year. So here are the titans who will play (again): Paul Van Dyk and Armin Van Buuren. Another dance legend to play is Moby, who didn't appear at Ultra last year, but is generally always lurking around during WMC and thus seems not too rare. But remember th

  • The Shelborne Announces Its Heavyweight WMC Lineup

I know, I know, WMC talk already -- yikes, we just celebrated the new year. But if you've got any interest in WMC then you know that the Shelborne always grabs absolutely stellar lineups who play legendary parties. If you like big-room house music, you've already been to some of these, and you already know. This year doesn't disappoint, as the hotel (and home of the classy club Shine) has teamed up with DJ magazine this year, to host all of the publication's workshops, signings, and parties this

  • Shelborne Announces WMC Opening Pool Party With David Guetta ... For $10!

The scaling back of this past Art Basel Miami Beach was noticeable, with fewer freebies and lower-key events. So it's safe to assume that the final big event of the "season," Winter Music Conference, is going to look a little different overall this year, too. It's doubtful that megawatt DJs will be able to still command their usual booking fees, or that regular clubbers (that is, not industry people who get onto guest lists for everything) will want to shell out the huge attendant cover cha

  • Full Ultra Music Festival Lineup Revealed

So in addition to yesterday's news of the unexplainable choice of booking the Black Eyed Peas for next month's Ultra Music Festival, the final phase of the lineup has been announced. Notable additions include Rinton, Rye Rye, Surkin, Para One and Shiny Toy Guns to Day 1, and MSTRKRFT, BT Laptop Symphony and Stanton Warriors to Day 2. The Bloody Beetroots and L.A. Riots are scheduled to perform both days, while The Whip's Day 2 appearance has been switched to Day 1, and Late of the Pier has switc

  • WMC Preview: Steve Lawler's Annual Lights Out Party Moved to Nocturnal

This year marks the eighth edition of Steve Lawler's annual Lights Out WMC party, one of conference's most popular and bullshit-free parties. This year, the event was originally set to take place at Kore, on Washington Avenue -- but it's now been moved to Nocturnal. The warehouse-like downtown space is much more fitting for the party's rave-y vibe. Here's what Lawler's got to say about his musical plans for this year's event: After 8 years of Lights Out at the Winter Music Conference, I believe

  • Mad Skrews Got Beats

Mad Skrews is a Miami-bred, internationally renowned producer and musical entrepreneur who uses the Internet to spread his productions, make money, and make a name for himself. He has produced for local bad bitch Trina and true founder of crunk, Pastor Troy. I caught up with him by e-mail. Here's what he had to say:"I'm Mad Skrews, producer from Miami. Original born in Colombia, raised here. I started making music in 11th grade in high school (2001) messing around with Sound Forge and Fruity Lo

  • Ida Engberg Plays Space this Saturday

Swedish DJ/producer Ida Engberg is one of the fastest-rising female stars in the male-studded world of techno. A resident of Stockholm's legendary Cocktail Club, her career was kicked off auspiciously in the mid-2000s and headed right to the top, where she's shared the decks with some of the biggest names in both commercial and underground EDM, including Roger Sanchez, Eric Prydz, Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Lawler, and John Dahlbäck, who signed her to his Pickadoll label in 2007. With a

  • Steve Lawler Plays Gryphon Thursday

Legendary British DJ/producer Stave Lawler will be playing at Gryphon Nightclub at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino this Thursday night. A child of the '90s UK rave scene, Lawler got his start organizing some of the infamous M42 Motorway illegal parties as a teenager, before getting his big break in 1995 when he was signed on as a resident DJ at Liverpool's famed Cream nightclub. His production work, which includes releases under the Novocane and Chameleon monikers, has garnered massiv

  • Q&A With Steve Lawler, Spinning at Gryphon Tonight

With his Lights Out parties and releases, British super-DJ Steve Lawler ruled dance floors with a sound that lived up to that name. It was thumping, dark, and almost fiercely inward-looking -- it was no surprise, really, that Lawler cited Depeche Mode and the Doors  as influences. But just as things were getting to their heaviest in the real world, Lawler seems to have lightened up, channeling a sunnier, perhaps more South American influence. Certain scribes have dubbed it "carnival house,"
