Subject: South Beach (Staten Island)

  • Openings, Closings, Remodelings, Oh My!

Akashisushi.com Akashi, a city in Japan known for its seafood, means "bright stone" When one door closes, another opens...    Akashi on South Beach has closed on the second floor of "Fresh on 5th" deli at 5th and Ocean. The location had a short ride, opening up just a few weeks after Akashi's Coconut Grove satellite.  Owner Larry Chi tells Short Order that he's not through with the Beach yet, but a new direction is TBD.

Michael Gilligan has left his executive chef position at Atrio/Level 25 at the Conrad Hotel to become executive chef at the W Hotel in South  Beach. Besides managing culinary affairs for the property in general, Gilligan will be overseeing Solea, the condo hotel restaurant described as "Mediterranean with strong Spanish influences". The W will also host, as a separate entity, the acclaimed Mr. Chow, which in 1974 premiered in Beverly HIlls and has since sizzled its' way into New York, Londo

A bloody good deal this is: From 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays, guests at 8 oz. Burger Bar can partake of unlimited Bloody Mary drinks for $20 per person. Best part:You customize it any bloody way you want. The base of the 8 oz. drink can be a shot of vodka, gin, or tequila. Usually you become a rap superstar and then get into crazy shenanigans on South Beach. It sure is a bummer that a hooker almost bit off Vince Shlomi's tongue, because beforehand, he obviously had a golden flow.

  • Diary of a Flasher: Urban Beach Week, Dirty Hairy, and Youth Fair, Bro!

Photo by Jipsy, nefariousgirl.comLIV's light show is out of this worldWith all the rain and clouds, I've kept myself busy shooting all over town. Best time, in a long time, goes to the 10th annual Urban Beach Week this past weekend. Ocean Drive is wide open, but traffic was almost at a standstill. That is, of course, because part of the experience is to cruise all over South Beach showing off your chromed-out, expensive cars and that alone seemed like a parade of shiny, colorful toys. My favorit

  • Brooke Hogan's Lesbian Kiss

The premiere of Brooke Knows Best's second season was, dare I say, touching. We all know the personal saga of the Hogans (a messy divorce, the son's stint in jail, and the matriarch dating a 19-year-old boy toy), but that episode almost made you feel for a family with loads of money and a dangerous reality-TV addiction. Sure, taking a boat trip with your pro-wrestler father toward the dock of your mother's multimillion-dollar bay-front Clearwater mansion and being greeted by the whimper

Let's say tomorrow rolls around and you finally manage to tear yourself away from CNN's round-the-clock coverage of all things Michael Jackson to celebrate the birth of our nation and the day Will Smith freed us from alien annihilation. You find yourself on South Beach for some Fourth of July festivities. I know it's a stretch, but work with me here. Now let's say you've spent much of the day on the beach, perhaps sipping suds from your cooler and maybe partaking of the occasional frozen con

  • 305 Photo of the Day: The Most Patriotic Lifeguard Stand Ever

Visitors often comment on how "European" or "South American" South Beach feels, but it's nice to get a reminder once in a while that, yes, you are indeed in America and we tend to love our Country as much as any other place in it. Maybe that means we express it through lifeguard stands and the occasional stars and stripes thongs, but damn it South Beach loves America. Today's photo comes from P Keigan's Flickr.

Pen and pad in hand we approach them in kitchens, at bars, in hallways and at hostess stands. Sometimes the stories come to us.That's how we met twenty eight year old Carol Mel (made up name). The South Miami High class of 99' grad was hustling an order out when she stopped to ask what we were doing in the kitchen. "You got any good stori

  • Sources Say Opium Group Moving in on Mokai, One Step Closer to South Beach Monopoly

Well it isn't exactly news that Mokai "closed for renovations" -- code word usually for closed for good -- a few weeks ago. Well, Talk Nightlife reports that a source claims Opium Group has signed a letter of intent for Mokai. Although it says "nothing concrete," we wouldn't exactly be surprised of the news considering the company recently took ownership of Cameo, a mega-club hardly a block away from its "most-beloved club" Mansion.Much like the Cameo and Mansion proximity, if the rumor turns

Between the state of the condo market, parking on South Beach, and the final price tag for the new Marlins stadium, Miamians have suffered through plenty of real-life horrors. So for Halloween parties this year, Riptide is going to put away the Freddy mask and show up in homemade costumes inspired by the Magic City. Here's how to dress up as your favorite Miamian:Fighter Kimbo Slice: Shave the top of your head. • Goodbye Cheeseme

Cheeseme, maybe the best place to get a cheese sandwich in the Western world, has closed on South Beach . The place served from a list of 9 breads, 11 types of meat, 11 veggies, 11 sauces and spreads, and 16 types of cheese. There were also soups, salads, and goodies like fondue and beignets. No word on the next incarnation of its 1200 Washington Avenue location.
