  • Culinary Travels in Costa Rica: Part 2

One of Costa Rica's many beach-side sodas, shaded from the hot coastal sun by an umbrella of tall trees. Yesterday I talked a little bit about Costa Rica's plato tipical, casado - and more specifically, rice and beans. Now, when you're producing rice and beans in such quantities as to make it the central aspect of a plate, you're bound to have some leftovers. Like cold pizza or breakfast burritos, Costa Ricans adapt these heaps of leftovers into gallo pinto: a saute of black beans and rice alon

  • Culinary Travels in Costa Rica: Part 3

I'm going to wrap up this short little porthole into Costa Rican cuisine talking a little bit about everything -- probably in a very rambling, tangential sort of way. Just a fair warning. Native fruit is definitely one of the more unique aspects of eating in Costa Rica. You've got your average tropical fair, of course, including bananas and oranges and mangos and guayaba (guava). but then you've got oddities like this: That disgusting looking spewdum of goo and seeds is a granadilla, and i

  • Fried, Smoked, Dipped, and Fried Again at the Broward County Fair

The fair is a veritable smorgasbord...                Photos by C. StilesIf there's one thing to be said about the traditional county fair, it's that they're perfect testing grounds for new foods; prime places to push the boundaries a bit, largely in pursuit of an answer to the question, "What doesn't taste better fried?" With this in mind, I ventured out to the Broward County Fair on Friday night with our photographer C.

  • Musings: South Beach Wine & Food, Midtown and Root Beer

In light of the upcoming South Beach Wine & Food Festival, I propose a law requiring that no posted photo of any Food Network personality ever exceed the size of a postage stamp. Our fine dining establishments are much improved in terms of the quality of cuisine served, but they've still got a ways to go concerning desserts. The Shops At Midtown boasts a roster of incoming restaurants, none of which seems to be exactly rushing to open. Speaking of Midtown: If anyone wants to start up a reall

  • Over the Weekend: Homebrew Fest at BX Beer Depot

It was an afternoon filled with beer, beer, and more beer as Lake Worth's BX Beer Depot hosted its first Homebrew Fest, an intimate gathering where members of BX's Lagerhead Brewers Club shared their handcrafted creations with the public. There were nearly a dozen homebrew beers on tap at the tiled-topped bar behind the Depot -- from Belgian Wit to Imperial IPA to Hard Cider -- plus a booth where you could sign up for BX's homebrew classes, email lists, and club dates. And there was good company

  • Hugo Chávez Bans Coke Zero in Venezuela

Hugo Chávez hates America, and now he's banning a product close to our hearts: Coke Zero.  A weird-tasting, chemical-laden, no-calorie substitute for an iconic soft drink we consume in order to feel a bit "healthier" is pretty much as good a symbol for modern America as anything. "The product should be withdrawn from circulation to preserve the health of Venezuelans," said Health Minister Jesus Mantilla, offering little clarification as to what dire health threats Coke Zero presents. Coke sa
