  • Morrissey Returns to South Florida (Maybe?) on Feb. 28

For hardcore Morrissey fans, especially those of us in South Florida, 2007 was somewhat emotionally tumultuous. First, he played an amazing summer show here, in support of Ringleader of the Tormenters -- good (in spite of the cruel heat). Except the show was at the Mizner Park Amphitheatre in Boca -- bad if you live in Miami or South Broward, or are severely allergic to concerts held in outdoor malls. Then, Moz announced he would, that fall, embark on his last tour ever "for the foreseeable futu

  • Virgins Revitalize Orlando's Punk Sound

Virgins Miscarriage (Kiss of Death) It seems like just a few months ago, Sam Johnson was wandering around Orlando, telling people that his longtime band, New Mexican Disaster Squad, was ending, but that he had a new thing cooking -- and maybe this next band would be recording some demos soon. In actuality, it was just a few months ago, and those soon-to-be demos quickly transmogrified into the debut album from Johnson's new escapade, Virgins. Not to be confused with major-label mallrockers the

  • State Lawmakers Pull an All-Nighter at the BCS

Things were really weird yesterday (Did you miss me? No? Oh,thanks.), and I ended up briefly at the Opa-locka Executive Airport before heading up to West Palm Beach, only to turn around and drive back to Miami. Anyway, the runway was busy with lots of bigwigs flying in for the BCS game. Bigwigs such as a pack of Republican state lawmakers from the Orlando area who flew in on a charter jet owned by a lobbyist. They supposedly paid their own way, though, but they didn't get back to Tallahassee u

  • Morrissey Cancels South Florida Show ... AGAIN

Local Morrissey fans were super-excited at the end of 2007, when it seemed the singer would return for a second area show that year. After an extremely well-received performance at Boca's Mizner Park Amphitheatre, he was slated to end his extended United States run with a date at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Then, he cancelled. The very afternoon of the show, due to "illness." So it seemed like he was throwing us a bone by beginning his current tour, in support of his latest album, Years of Refu

  • Magic City Kitty - My Girl Stole My Ballz

Hello, KittyTwo weeks ago, my girl came down from Orlando to visit for the weekend. I was stoked to spend time with her because we've been in a long-distance relationship since January and have seen each other only six times since then. I made plans for us to do all the things that in-town couples do, and she seemed like she was having a great time. Then, on Saturday, she decided to go have dinner with some of her college friends. I was a little pissed she would let her girls cut into our tim

  • Can Orlando Double as Miami?

via BlavishCan Orlando, home of Mickey Mouse et al., successfully double as Miami? The makers of Just Another Day think so. The film stars Jamie Hector and Wood Harris (both of The Wire) and follows a day in the life of a rising rap star and a veteran rhymer as they go through a hyper-paced day in Miami. Except the film is being shot in downtown Orlando. Director Peter Spirer, a University of Miami film  school grad whose first documentary, Blood Ties: The Life and Work of Sally Mann, was nomi

  • ArtOfficial Wins Florida Grammy Showcase at FMF

I mentioned here previously that out of the six artists chosen as finalists for the Florida Grammy Showcase in Orlando last Wednesday, five were from Miami. They were, to recap, Selena Serrano, Spinlight City, Tristan Clopet & the Juice, and finally local favorites Awesome New Republic and ArtOfficial. I said in that post that the latter are bordering on national recognition, and the outcome of the showcase confirmed that -- ArtOfficial were declared the winners, band-battle style. According

  • Obama Announces High Speed Rail Plan, Including a Line in Florida

via The White HouseCertain wingnuts think President Obama was born in Africa? Have they ever thought he might actually be European? First he tries and brings small bits of "socialism" that have been hall mark of many healthy, European democracies for decade, then he tries to shove soccer down our throats, and now he wants us to all ride around in fancy high speed trains like the Euros.

  • Five Miami Bands Play the Florida Grammy Showcase at FMF on Wednesday

photo by Karla Garcia, via grammy.comThe annual Florida Music Festival kicks off its eighth year tonight, and while it's up in Orlando, more and more South Florida bands are turning towards the multi-day music crawl as a sort of SXSW lite. Billed as featuring 250 performances across 15 stages and three days, the FMF is organized much like other national music conferences. Bands from across the state submit their material for consideration, and if chosen, they play one or more showcases across do

  • WTVJ's Nick Bogert Leaving for Chicago

TV news is hurting. The best are deserting us. Nick Bogert, the WTVJ smart guy who has provided some politics and substance along with the gore on the local airwaves, will depart for Chicago this fall. He's covered everything from hurricanes to the fall of commissioners such as Joe Gersten, Miller Dawkins, and Humberto Hernandez. He's helped us understand the news. That's a rapidly disappearing quality. He's also my neighbor and I'll miss him. Thanks to SFLTV for reporting this first. Also out

  • The Postmarks Get Spiffy New Makeover, Schedule South Florida Show at Propaganda on July 10

Wow. Do we like this new look for the Postmarks? They were always pretty low-key in the hair/make-up/costume department before, but their new makeover is sharp. They look like mod assassins! Actually, frontwoman Tim looks more than a bit like a brunette Francoise Hardy here. It's appropriate, since the bandmates are avowed Francophiles as well as Anglophiles.Still, if the band looks slightly more aggressive in this photo, perhaps it fits with the new direction in sound it's taken for its upcomin

  • Blazed and Confused Tour Date Moved to Orlando, Mickey Avalon Still Playing in Town

The South Florida stop of the Blazed and Confused tour, originally scheduled for August 1 at Bayfront Park in Miami, has been canceled. Promotion company AEG Live says it's due to "scheduling conflicts," and, strangely, the whole date seems to have been moved north to Orlando's Hard Rock Live, according to the Blazed and Confused Facebook page. That seems unlikely, considering Most of the artists have rescheduled to play an individual local date nearby.
