  • Whatever Happened To Coral Gables?

It wasn't that long ago that serious diners in these parts pointed to Coral Gables as the go-to spot for eating out. Palme d'Or, Pascals, Ortanique, Christy's, Caffe Abracci, Francesco's, Norman's, Mundo, Chispa, Restaurant Brana, Max's Grille, The Palm Steakhouse...quite a roster. Mundo, Norman's, Chispa, Restaurant Brana, Max's Grille and The Palm have since left, and excepting La Cofradia and Por Fin, not much of note has come in to replace them -- unless you include the slew of chains like S

  • The South Florida Newspaper Apocalypse is Imminent

Bob Norman, over at our sister paper the BPB New Times, has been chronicling the misfortunes of our local daily papers for quite some time now, and the shit hit the fan this weekend. It is 2013 for the black and white and red all overs. To Recap:  The New York Times reported late Friday that McClatchy is said to be trying to sell The Miami Herald, one of its largest and most prestigious papers. Then, the parent company of The Sun-Sentinel, Tribune Co is said to be nearing bankruptcy. What d

  • Let's Play, "Where's Norman?"

Coming soon, to a restaurant near youA couple of weeks ago we were musing about hot old chefs, and we wondered aloud where the hell Norman Van Aken had got to. I'm a bit late with this news, being way up here in Broward, but it turns out the Norman has returned at last to stage further conquests. A few days ago we heard this from South Florida Menu Pages:Norman's 180 Scheduled For A Fall Opening "We've been trying to get some more information on Norman's 180, Norman Van Aken's return to Coral G

  • The Scoop On Norman's 180

Norman Takes A 180 TurnIt was just over a month ago that I started to pester Norman Van Aken with emails. Like everyone else, I had heard he was returning to Coral Gables with Norman's 180 in the Colonnade Hotel (180 Aragon Avenue) and asked whether he would share some of the back story to the new place with our readers. I was curious about how he might determine the concept, plan the menu, develop the recipes, and, in general, what thought processes he might go through in shaping his new restau

  • Banh Mi, Pretty Please, @NormanVanAken?

Norman Van Aken Thanks for TweetingAsk and you shall receive.  Norman Van Aken is up in Orlando hanging with his Ritz Carlton crew, and hit up the Twitter about some insane twist on Banh Mi causing a stir with guests...  I fell in love at first bite when I was introduced to these french baguette Vietnamese sandwiches in NYC, so I just HAD to know what Norman was up to.  When were we going to get a taste of these in our deprived hometown!?  After getting the preview to the lef

  • Norman Van Aken: "The Best Thing I Ever Ate"

Foodnetwork.com Our turn!Norman Van Aken, chef/owner of Norman's at the Ritz-Carlton, Orlando (and soon-to-be Norman's 180 in Coral Gables) A war might break out in the family if I decided on one barbecue dish, but I feel safe recalling a fried treasure.  We went up to Charleston, South Carolina, back in about '86 for a big symposium on American food. All manner of comestibles were on deck that weekend, but one of the most extraordinary was at a "field dinner" held on the grounds of a pl

  • Norman's 180 Update: Blueprints and Van Aken's Moving Plans

Twitpic.comArchitect Malcolm Berg with some pointers, via @normanvanakenBlueprints and drawings for Norman's 180, Norman Van Aken's forthcoming Coral Gables restaurant slated to open at 180 Aragon in the Colonnade Hotel in November, are now on his architect's website.  At first glance, the design itself will be a social lubricant, featuring elements conducive to sharing and interaction among diners, such as communal tables and a long bar, a focal point snaking through the main dining room.M

  • Van Aken Offers Nibbles of Norman's 180 Menu and Its New "Broadly American" Inspiration

Norman Van Aken Staying on his game in Orlando (here with "Cuba Libre" Pork Belly Biscuit for its Taste of the Nation,) things are looking mighty tasty.Norman Van Aken and his '180' team, including Chefs Philip Bryant and Justin Van Aken, are operating under a three-word mantra when it comes to their goals for the new restaurant slated to open in Coral Gables before the end of the year: "Desirability, Sustainability, Community."  Poised to re-enter the South Florida restaurant sc
