  • Restaurant Preview 2

Michelle Bernstein's Sra. Martinez will be debuting this Monday in the  Design District. On Tuesday the Wynwood hood, which has been quiet as an empty canvas concerning food, will finally have a restaurant: Joey's, a contemporary Italian café at 2506 N.W. 2nd Avenue. Developer Joey Goldman and well-known father/partner Tony have tapped Ivo Mazzon, from Veneto, Italy, to be executive chef. "Healthy, classic dishes from Veneto and other Italian regions" are in store, and blackboard specials

  • Check, Please! Two Debuts Tonight

Season two of Check, Please! kicks off tonight on WPBT-2, with Michelle Bernstein returning to host and lead each week's panel discussion. The show features three dining enthusiasts who escort one another to their respective favorite restaurant, then afterward in the studio, make-believe they are reviewers and dish about the meals. In other words, they are trying to steal my job.Among the 15 folks chosen for this season's five new episodes are a Coral Gables school teacher, Palm Beach County tow

  • Michy's Croquetas Recipe

You asked, we fetched. Mercy wrote in: "I tried making Michy's croquetas and matched up the ingredients well -- but what breading is used?  Can you give me the receipe for the croquetas and fig marmalade? It is one of my favorites."The recipe for croquetas with blue cheese and jamón serrano is actually on page 3 of Michelle Bernstein's cookbook Cuisine á Latina -- which I believe loosely translates to strike while the iron is hot. Then again, admittedly my Spanish still needs some work.I

TwitterBoiling it down on the Twittermonster... you go girl!Michelle Bernstein knows not to mess with a good thing.  But it's nice to see that a busy bee who juggles ownership of three restaurants, her own TV show, a consultancy with Delta, and a leadership role with nonprofit Common Threads is still able to direct the necessary attention to her bread and butter -- being a great chef and finding time for her flagship gourmet neighborhood joint cum national media darling, Michy's.

  • Bernstein, Eismann, and Johnny V Forsake Helpless Animals

A few years ago I wrote a feature in New Times called Foie Wars, in which a dozen local chefs offered their views on the bloated liver controversy. I bring this up not to revisit the debate, but rather as a cheesy way to recycle a past article for self-promotional reasons. And also because I thought it might be interesting to see what a couple of toques who had stopped serving foie gras are doing today, and to see what another one who was sitting on the fence has decided. Of the chefs interviewe

If chicken was the first female president she would be called Aberhen Lincoln. Think out of the bawks. What came first the chicken or the biscuit? Who cares, pass the biscuits. Photo by JipsyRewind your Walkman to Friday's totally '80s birthday party for aged-to-perfection Brian Antoni and Nick D'Annunzio at the The Viceroy at Club 50. This duo teamed up on a mission to resurrect their '80s glory days. One of the headline names was enough to drag me across the bridge − I rolled in solo, considering my date got drunk and passed out before the party even started (hey Noah − call me). No worries, I called in the b-team and it was game on. In no time I was elbow dee

  • And Sra. Martinez, Too

I reported yesterday that Area 31 was named as one of Esquire Magazine's Top 20 New Restaurants of 2009. Michelle Bernstein's Sra. Martinez also made the list. On the one hand, I apologize for missing that. On the other hand, the woman gets more than enough press. One more acknowledgement: Kaitlin Yelle of Meat Market got Mariani's nod for  "hostess of the year". "Her secret? To smile and be happy, and make the customer feel special." Sort of sounds like a dumb award, but in fact the host/h

  • Short Order Samples World's Strongest Beer, Survives

Doesn't the dude above (video by Jake Katel) just look-and sound- like the human embodiment of a Boston-brewed beer with a whopping 27% alcohol content? All he needs is one of those colonial get-ups and, like, a drunk horse by his side.Sam Adams brewmaster Bob Cannon invited Short Order to a "beer dinner" at the Upper Eastside eatery Michy's. This was a lot different than the beer dinners we usually treat ourselves to, which usually involve malt liquor and a peanut butter cracker. Chef Michelle
