  • All the Nasty Bits from an Evening with Anthony Bourdain and Mario Batali

Elyse Wanshel Mario Batali and Anthony Bourdain at the Miami Book Fair International Thursday night. Although former junkie/gutter chef, Anthony Bourdain claims that his life is “all rainbows and unicorns” ever since the birth of his baby daughter, many of his random comments during last night’s “Evening With” talk with fellow chef Mario Batali still had lots of bite. Here’s all the nasty bits: According to Romania, Bourdain is linked to the KGB. Big ladies with an appetite for

  • Last Night: Anthony Bourdain at the Arsht Center

This man loves Mac's Club Deuce. (Reason No. 293 why we love this man.) Better Than: Pounding cheap beers between a soul-crushing double on the saute station. The evidence, plainly, is undeniable: the best-selling books, the top-rated Travel Channel Show, the Top Chef judging gigs. Hell, even the playbills posted outside the Arsht Center spell out the cold reality in cruel red letters: Anthony Bourdain is a celebrity chef. But after spending a couple hours with the guy at the Arsht Center

  • An Interview With Ted Allen

    C. StilesNectar Lounge at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek was host to the Christmas-ey dessert party, Sweet Dreams, this weekend. The event featured a huge spread of sugary cakes, candies, flash-frozen ice cream, and dessert sushi, which you can check out by viewing our slide show. But it also featured celebrity host, Ted Allen, who was there promoting his new cookbook, The Food You Want to Eat: 100 Smart, Simple Recipes. In between stuffing our faces with sweets, New Times got a chance to sit

  • Food And Wine 2009 - Chef De Cuisine Jason Smith Talks Table 8

Food & Wine 2009 is almost upon us. You know what that means. The culinary throngs descend on South Florida, feast on its tropical flesh in a media-driven frenzy, and hopefully dump enough money on our shores to keep us goin til next year. Aaron J. Michaels from Culinary Convenience told me Chef Jason Smith would be a good dude to talk to. Jason Smith is the Chef de Cuisine over at Table 8 South Beach. He talked about Billy Joel, Oprah, and Mario Batali. Here's what he had to say...

  • Why Was Batali Even Up There?

We're referring to Mario Batali being "up there" on stage at the SBWFF's Wines and Food of Spain dinner. You've probably heard that he dropped a couple of F-bombs in front of the royal company. And speaking of F-bombs: What the fuck was he even doing on that platform welcoming the King and Queen of Spain to our city? We've got more than enough great chefs that could have done so, and in the process given Miami's culinary scene a boost. It is nothing less than a slap in the face to our local culi

  • Mario Batali's Carne Machaca Taco Filling

Last week, Mario Batali unveiled a new recipe at an event to benefit his equally new charity, The Mario Batali Foundation. The recipe was for machaca, which comes from the Mexican word machacado -- 'pounded' or 'crushed'. The preparation originated with the ranchers and cowboys of northern Mexico, who would air-dry beef with chile peppers and spices in order to preserve it. The meat would then be rehydrated and slowly cooked over an open flame until falling apart. "Machaca is easy to make, authen

  • Dewey LoSasso Gets the 10 -- Questions, That Is...

Dewey LoSassoWhere, oh where did Dewey LoSasso go? After recently closing his beloved North One 10, some suspected that perhaps this "Mango Gang" co-founder tossed aside his skillets for a stint as a guitarist, but fans will be thrilled to know they will find behind the line as executive chef at The Forge in mid-December. (As for his charming wife Dale, North One 10's front of the house maven, she is busy keeping Soleá at the W South Beach humming along as general manager). We thought perhaps

  • Weekly Wrap Up: The Friday Lord's Prayer

Jacob KatelWhen life gives you lemons....go to a restaurant, enjoy a meal, and have lemon curd for dessert. Though work's not gone, thy week is done, in the city, the suburbs, and rurals. Give us this our daily blog. And go get us some wings, as we go get us some pitchers. And lead us not into another belligerent drunk, but deliver us some pizza when we get like that. For Dade is the county, money is power, and the Heat are the glory, for ever. Amen. Here's what you might have missed this wee
