  • Florida Lawmakers Argue over Novelty Lighters Ban

via NY Dept of StateIn case you haven't noticed, we're in the middle of some serious stuff right now, politically speaking. Oh, you know, greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression, underfunded schools, a failing health-care system -- that kind of stuff. Which is why we're just so glad the Florida House spent a lot of time debating the ever-pressing topic of novelty lighters. Yes, little lighters that resemble toys.  Rep. Scott Plakon (R-Longwood) wants to ban them, but Rep. J.C. P

  • No One Wants To Watch Politicians Sing On YouTube, Let Alone Talk Politics

Here is one of our local state House members, Republican J.C. Planas, belting out "Walking in Memphis" at Disney's new American Idol attraction, as first seen on Naked Politics about a week ago. So far it only has 898 views. Which by YouTube standards is paltry, but by politician standards is down right astronomical. Ileana Ros-Lehtnin's only has 842 views for her official YouTube channel total, and she's federal. The videos on other local US Congressmen, like Debbie Wasserman Schultz and M

In 2007, a Pensacola man decided to have a perv-y day and look up ladies' skirts at a Barnes & Noble. He got caught, but when the case went to court, he got off because Florida laws didn't specifically outlaw voyeurism in public spaces. It's only illegal in places where people can expect a reasonable amount of privacy, which apparently doesn't include bookstores. Now legilsators are looking to rewrite the law. A new bill expected to be introduced in the House makes it illegal to "look under

  • 'Apprentice' Reject Raking Up Campaign Cash

Naked Politics reports that out of all candidates for the state house, Jose "Pepi" Diaz has raised the most money so far. Which is not only shocking because Diaz is not an incumbent, but also because he's a reality TV show wash out. Diaz appeared on Season 5 of Donald Trump's The Apprentice, and after a poor showing as team leader in the second episode (his team got whomped thoroughly) was fired in a SHOCKING double elimination. As Wikipedia's entry on the season states, "Pepi is fired for not l

  • State Stem Cell Funding Ban Upheld

Last month President Obama repealed the ban on federal funding on stem cell research, but that doesn't necessarily open the door to state funding. Yesterday, the state house voted to keep language in a bill that would bar universities from using state money for embryonic stem cell research 68-46. The vote mainly broke along party lines, but five Republicans voted for the removal of the ban, while two democrats voted against. Amongst the Republican was J.C. Planas whose father has Parkinson's dis
