  • Commission Gets Fat on Avocadoes

If you thought the Federal ethics charges against Mary McCarty and her band of merry Palm Beach County and City Commissioners was scandalous enough, you haven't heard what the California Avocado Commission has been up to in the past three years. McCarty, after all, only accepted a few free hotel rooms and pushed a couple of jobs in her husband's path. But according to a state audit reported in today's New York Times, the folks who are paid by California farmers to promote everybody's favorite

  • WMC 2009: A Party Worth Blogging About? Not Really

Jose D. DuranIf there is nobody at a pool party can you still call it a pool party? Just returned from the Gansevoort South. Music editor Arielle Castillo and I were at the A Party Worth Blogging About event by EatSkeet.com and HipsterRunoff.com. So in honor of HRO I'm going to ask a few philosophical questions:Do pool parties need people in order for it to be a 'partie'?If someone plugs in an iPod are they still DJing? How many children can a $9 Heineken feed?I don't think I would be so critical

  • WMC 2009: La India to Make an Appearance the Shelborne This Afternoon

For the Latin music lovers out there, WMC hasn't forgotten about you. Our sources at the Shelborne say salsa princess La India is slated to make a cameo some time this afternoon, er, which is basically now. The hotel is hosting DJ Magazine's Recession Sessions so this ought to be interesting. We're stuck going to the Bacardi B-Live event at Blade, but let us know if you hear of what went down.

  • Fancy Vending Machine Board Shorts Include Hidden Scavenger Hunt

Does that headline make any sense to you? We're feeling a touch of the surreal today, so we went with that over "Standard Hotels Teams with Quicksilver," which is indeed what this is all about. André Balazs' Standard boutique hotel chain teamed up with Quicksilver, titan of the mall surf store industry, to produce a line of shorts based on each of the four Standard locations. They're a bit retro, with a '70s length that hits mid-thigh, but made with modern materials and fits.

  • Airport Hotel the Scene of a Possible Murder

Miami-Dade Police found a young Hialeah man dead this morning at the Days Inn Miami International Airport Hotel. He was identified at 3:30 a.m. as 21-year-old Raudel Sanchez. The noisy, rundown hotel is located on NW 11th Street on the southwest side of the airport. Not much is yet known about Sanchez. Records show he has no criminal history in Miami-Dade or Broward. He has only one dismissed infraction for fishing on a bridge. Managers at Days Inn did not immediately return calls se

  • National Media Weighs in on Pitbull's Rebelution

Pitbull's new album, Rebelution, officially came out yesterday, though in these parts we've been hearing lead singles "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" and "Hotel Room Service" (and even "Krazy") for what seems like forever already. And because Pitbull seems like such a Miami phenomenon, it's almsot hard to fathom just how popular "Calle Ocho" was this summer. Just check out the Wikipedia stats on all its Billboart chart placements. The song hit number one in Spain and France, and scored top

  • Survey: Miamians Are the Prettiest People in America, Just Not So Bright

via Emilio Labrador's FlickrTravel Leisure unleashed its annual survey of American travelers, and the magazine seems to think people in Miami are both hot as hell and dumb as hell. The Big Orange took first place for most attractive people and second for most stylish city, and let me tell you I can't remember how many times I've walked into a normal, everyday place like a gas station and think, Woah, did I accidentally walk backstage at a fashion show? I just came here to get some morning co
