Is a DJ a musician? Some say yes, some say no. If you say yes, what happens when the DJ ditches the turntable and kicks on the Serato? Are they still musicians? And what about the Pioneer CDJ folks? Or the Apple core crowd? Are they musicians too?The question is as old as disco and has been revived at least as many times. The answer is also pretty much moot. What difference does it make if you consider a turntable to be an instrument as long as the person behind it is playing music worth dancing

  • Fred Everything Plays Electric Pickle this Friday

Fred Everything (born Frédéric Blais in Quebec) got his moniker back in the rave days, when he was known as DJ Everything, because he'd spin everything from house and techno to drum 'n' bass. With a prolific career dating back to 1993, when he first opened for Sasha at Montreal's club Metropolis, he has gained massive international following as Canada's foremost house DJ and producer. Fred has since toured all over the planet, performing at renowned venues from London and Ibiza to São Paulo,

  • Q&A With DJ Chachi, Spinning Tonight at LIV

Of all the out of town head-spinners to hit South Beach, the one who would seem most perfectly suited for LIV has gotta be DJ Chachi. Yeah, we know. His primary residency is at New York's ultra-hip Ten June, which might boast a similar clientele, but it in no way resembles the Vegas-like feel of The Fontainebleau. The Borgata's Mur.Mur does though, as does Shrine in the MGM Grand, despite the fact that one's in Atlantic City and the other's in Connecticut. And yes, Chachi's a resident at both th

The latest petFood podcast, petCast003, came out this week and this one is mixed by L.A.'s Shoddy Lynn. The podcast series is the brainchild of Miami natives Lazaro Casanova and Jay-You. They put out a nice stream of electronic based music that incorporates elements of Miami's Caribbean flavor and rhythms. Once a month they put out a podcast in addition to DJing around the country in between recording their own and others' releases.Download this month's petCast here: http://www.sendspace.com/fil

Deadmau5 (pronounce dead mouse for those reading this aloud) a.k.a. Joel Zimmerman, has just announced a North American tour with a stop at Revolution Live on November 13. The Canadian progressive house DJ is bringing his trademark high energy show (think full multimedia experience rather than just a dude bobbing his head while playing with a couple turntables) here in support of his upcoming "For Lack of a Better Name" album, slated to hit September 22. Tickets are on sale now for $15.50 via Ti

  • Mad About Miami: Moby Loves White Room Most (And the Carl Cox Tent at Ultra)

Being a Miami native, I'm always curious to hear what folks think about my hometown. And, as you might suspect, I'm not afraid to ask. When it's bold-faced name folks, I get even more curious. Not that their thoughts are any more or any less important than those of plain text folks, mind you; but that their thoughts do seem to get around more. And they're much more likely to have an impact too. So here is  what I hope will be the first in an occasional series called Mad About Miami, wher

  • Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John DJ Set at White Room Saturday

If you aren't already aware, Depeche Mode is rolling into town this week bringing along with it Swedish trio Peter Björn and John as its opening act. The indie-rock outfit has enjoyed a fair amount of success, particularly with its 2006 single "Young Folks" -- you know, that song that had whistling for a hook and a melody that made it almost impossible to forget.Saturday, after the Depeche Mode concert band member Björn Yttling will be spinning at White Room along with local DJs Tro

Like his brother Justin (by now a Miami favorite) DJ/producer Christian Martin boasts a highly energetic take on tripped-out melodic tech house which epitomizes everything that is fresh, imaginative and fun about contemporary electronic dance music. Schooled in Southern California's legendary Moontribe desert parties and late '90s club life in NYC, London and Los Angeles, Christian co-founded the esteemed San Francisco-based Dirtybird imprint along with brother Justin, Worthy and Claude VonSt

  • Felix da Housecat Returns to Miami on October 14 at LIV

These days everyone likes to pretend they didn't like electroclash at the turn of the millennium, and that it's in general a blight on the illustrious hipster recent past. (Give it another couple years and it'll be time for an electroclash "revival.") But for all that little flash in the pan's embarrassing haircuts and cookie-cutter songs about "the disco," some good did come out of it. First, it became cool for rock kids to dance again. But more importantly to the coming week at hand, a series

At her tender young age, Inbal Lankry is already something of a scene veteran. At age 15, the Brooklyn native was promoting for legendary NYC clubs Limelight, Tunnel and Paladium, while helping out older brother DJ Baby Sean with his residencies at various hot spots all over the city. In 2002, Inbal and her family migrated to South Florida where they opened Sonar nightclub in Hollywood, voted Best Club of 2004 and 2005 by New Times and City Link. A natural progression into DJing followed, mak

  • Q&A with DJ Ralph Lawson of 2020Soundsystem, Playing LIV on Saturday

In this age of laptop-toting faux live electronic dance music acts, an actual band employing actual live instrumentation and vocals is a rare thing, especially when said band is delivering funked-out dancefloor bangers like 2020Soundsystem. The musical brainchild of Leeds-based DJ and esteemed 2020Vision label owner Ralph Lawson, the Soundsystem was formed in 2003 as a means of interweaving live electronics with his DJ sets and transcending the tried-and-true record-jockeying formula at the c

via groovemaker.comCan you hear that faint thump? It's the heads of turntable purists smacking their heads against their desks. Still, like it or not, what constitutes "DJing" has forever changed with technology -- it's only a matter of time before somebody figures out how to use the DJ Hero controller in the club. Still, people have been using iPods to DJ since the devices came out, so why not the iPhone and iPod Touch?Three local DJs -- Chris Domingo, Speechless, and Scratch-D from Dynamix

  • Q&A with Cassy, Playing at the Electric Pickle on Saturday

Despite the hordes of electronic dance music artists living and working out of Berlin -- natives and foreign transplants alike -- few embody the spirit and sound of Berlin's contemporary EDM scene as fully as DJ/producer Cassy. Born Catherine Britton in England to a Caribbean father and Austrian mother, Cassy got her start performing as a guest vocalist on Elin's "Music Takes Me Higher" on Sabotage Records in 1999. Soon after she got bit by the techno bug and began honing her skills behind th
