  • WMC 2009: Is SXSW Cannabilizing WMC?

Kyle MunzenriederKid Sister at Don't Mess with Texas during SXSW.Before heading off to see Wavves (for the third time in 36 hours, as it turned out) an No Age (for the second time in 24), one of the last shows I saw at last week's SXSW was Kid Sister at the Don't Mess with Texas fest. Flanked by DJ duo Flosstradamus, the trio admitted that their voices were on its last legs after a week of partying and playing countless show, literally, giving credence to the meme that Winter Music Conference is

image via Miami New Times archives week of June 29 - July 5, 1988In the heat of the summer, better call out a plumber This week Archive Diver brings you an excerpt from an old New Times concert calendar from 1988. Look at this damn bill. California hardcore punk rock with Circle Jerks at the Button South. Texas thrash originators DRI with Creator (could that have actually been Kreator with a K?) and the Holy Terrors. Iron Maiden at the now-destroyed Miami Arena, and AC/DC at the same place five

  • Archive Diver: Debbie Gibson at West Palm Beach Auditorium, July 1988

image via Miami New Times archives issue week July 13 - 19, 1988 According to Wikipedia, Debbie Gibson holds the record for "youngest female artist ever to write, produce, and perform on a Billboard # 1 single." That's for her song "Foolish Beat," which is a pretty shitty song. Thanks to a shared producer, Debbie Gibson also sang back ups for legendary hardcore punk band The Circle Jerks on another shitty song, "I Wanna Destroy You," off their 1995 reunion album Oddities, Abnormalities, and Curio

  • South Florida According to Brooklyn: Why Didn't Anyone Watch Bad Religion at Warped Tour?

To read past installments of South Florida According to Brooklyn, click here. I attended the local stop of the Warped Tour, on Saturday, July 25 at the Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, and was disappointed that no one really watched Bad Religion. I don't get it! These guys are pioneers of punk rock. If it wasn't for them, these young kids wouldn't have bands like the Devil Wears Prada, or the other crap like that, to listen to. (Well, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing, but still.

  • Flyer of the Week: Christian Death at PS14 August 9

It was 1979 and punk was being born again in the glitter-flecked primordial muck of Los Angeles. Late-blooming skinheads and bands like Black Flag, the Circle Jerks, and the Germs were bashing the West Coast hardcore scene into shape, using little more than blunt force. For most fans of aggro tuneage, this latest reinvention of outrage and anarchy seemed like a perfectly acceptable next step in the evolution of anti-establishment noise. But 16-year-old Roger Alan Painter hated that shit. To h
