Nowadays, cakes are an art form, so any pastry chef worth her or his salt (or sugar) better be able to craft masterpieces. Local bakers Carolina Montoya and Fernando Puga, owners of Unique Designer's Cake, have proven their cake-crafting skills for the likes of Food Network, Art Basel, and the annual National Gingerbread Competition.

And now, the husband-and-wife duo have brought their talents to a brick-and-mortar showroom in Miami. Next Friday, March 15, you can join them in christening their sugary-sweet baby.

Former architects, the two launched their business after being laid off in 2009. "Because of our architectural backgrounds, our attention to detail is unseen in this industry," Montoya says.

Since then, they've appeared on Food Network's Sugar Dome, created a glow-in-the-dark Tron cake for German artist Anselm Reyle during Basel, twice placed in the top-ten finalists for the annual National Gingerbread Competition, and three years in a row scored grand prize for best gingerbread house in the annual Coral Gables Museum battle.

The grand-opening party will feature appearances by TV host Elizabeth Lopez and 2009 Nuestra Belleza Latina (and actress) Greidys Gil. They'll serve hors d'oeuvres, desserts, and cocktails, all to the tunes of DJ Africa.

Their new edible showroom promises to display "a tower of handbags that defy the laws of gravity," a 3-D Jeep helmed by animals, and lots of other goodies. Besides its function as a display space, the new digs will serve as an event area where UDC will teach participants to create and decorate desserts.

In addition to tiered cakes, sculpted cakes, wedding cakes, and gingerbread cakes, the duo also makes cupcakes in scrumptious flavors (lemoncello, anyone?), custom cake pops, and fondant-topped cookies.

Their designs have been noted by the likes of Christian Castro, José Feliciano, Oscar D'León, Gloria Trevi, Diego Torres, Ingrid Hoffmann, and Miami Heat players.

Attendees to the grand opening should RSVP by March 12 to [email protected] or 305-803-5505. The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, March 15, at 69 NW Ninth St., Miami.
