Eighty-five years ago, The Palm opened its first restaurant in New York City. The original owners, Pio Bozzi and John Ganzi wanted to name it La Palma, but their Italian accents were so thick, the city's licensing clerk misunderstood ... or so the legend goes.

There are a lot of legends associated with The Palm, most famously how

newspaper cartoonists and artists, long on talent but short on money,

traded lively caricatures and drawings for meals.

Almost a

century later, though The Palm has expanded to over two dozen locations,

it's still a family business and, in keeping with tradition, cartoons

and caricatures of repeat patrons, celebrities, and local movers and

shakers are still on the walls.

What is new at The Palm are

additional menu items, designed to compliment their hearty steak

selection. New to the chain are antipasti made with authentic Italian

meats and cheeses, home-made gelato, and warm sugared doughnuts.

To

celebrate their 85th birthday, The Palm is giving away $85 gift cards,

good at any Palm location, for 85 days, starting today.

Each day, The Palm will choose a winner from website entries. The contest runs through November 24.
