Plato Royale usually compares and critiques food. But in this edition, it's all about sangria.
The punch-like concoction is traditionally made with Spanish red wine from the Rioja region. But white wine sangria, sangria blanca, is a cool and crisp
alternative.
Restaurants throughout the area have their own spins on the drink, and today a slew of variations can be found at many bars too.
Below, Short Order compares versions at Jaguar Ceviche Spoon Bar & Latam Grill in Coconut Grove and Spanish-style eatery Por Fin in Coral Gables.
Jaguar
Pros: The sangria is prepared with white wine, typically a Sauvignon
Blanc, brandy, triple sec, orange juice, lime juice, simple syrup, and
peach schnapps. The drink is light and refreshing. And the added citrus
juices balance the alcohol mix well.
Cons: The added fruit pieces are chopped too small to thoroughly enjoy
and are not fresh.
Por Fin
Pros: The sangria is made with cava (a white sparkling wine), triple
sec, peach schnapps and simple syrup. The drink has a powerfully sweet
taste and is also delightfully refreshing. A spoonful of freshly cut,
juicy strawberries garnish the top of the drink and are an added treat.
Cons: The drink is rather strong, and the carbonation from the cava
makes it rather filling.
Verdict: While the white wine sangria at Jaguar is sweet and light, Por
Fin's bubbly version reigns supreme. The updated Spanish drink stays
true to tradition with simple ingredients and chunks of delectable fresh
fruit.
