Mellow Mushroom, the Atlanta-based pizza chain with locations all around the South, is set to open a new location on Sunset Drive sometime in mid-November. Known as a laid-back, neighborhood pizza joint, Mellow Mushroom doesn't feel like a chain. It's more like a local neighborhood gathering place where people can come together to enjoy chill vibes, yummy pizza, and craft beer.
Born from the "free-wheelin' hippie culture of the 1970s," Mellow Mushroom locations have been popping up all over since its 1974 debut in Atlanta, branching out to Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana; the South Miami opening will mark its 18th location in Florida. There are plenty of pizzerias here, but not really any where people can come and just like, soak in the vibes, man. Bonus: restricted diets can roam free at Mellow Mushroom, as gluten-free and vegetarian options abound.

And these aren't regular pizza pies -- you won't find banal toppings like anchovies or pepperoni. Instead, Mellow Mushroom features items like Kosmic Karma, which features a red sauce base with feta and mozzarella cheeses, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and Roma tomatoes with a pesto swirl. Meat lovers can try the Funky Q. Chicken, which features BBQ Chicken, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, caramelized onions, and Applewood smoked bacon. Guests can also build their own pizza.
While pizza features largely on the menu, there are also calzones, salads, and the cleverly-titled "munchies," which are exactly what they sound like: oven-roasted wings, spinach artichoke dip, and freshly made soft pretzels. Pretzels can be made with garlic butter and parmesan with a side of red sauce, with butter and Kosher salt with a side of mustard, or with cinnamon sugar and honey.
As no pizza place is complete without cold beer, we hope the new Sunset addition brings the same fantastic selection as downtown Delray Beach's spot, which boasts 100 on site beers; 50 on draft and 50 in bottles. Now, the restaurant will make 30 percent of their draft selection purely Florida-based, featuring favorites like Wynwood Brewing Company's La Rubia Blonde, Due South Caramel Cream Ale, and Funky Buddha Hop Gun IPA.
