On a recent afternoon, we braved the construction on Alton Road to visit Go-Go Fresh Food Café. It's a small, fast-casual restaurant where you order items from a menu laminated on the wall. Offerings include big salads, mini salads, soups, and the popular Go-Go pies (AKA empanadas).

As much as we love "big salads," we opted for the mini shrimp salad ($6.70) instead.

Turns out it wasn't that small after all.

It featured steamed shrimp, green peas, palm hearts, and mixed greens in a cilantro-lime dressing. It was fresh, flavorful, and zesty. We aren't health experts, but it certainly seemed like it would be a South Beach Diet-friendly dish.

Go-Go pies ($2.50) contain eclectic fillings. The classic Argentine empanada pairs ground beef with green olives, hardboiled eggs, scallions, and tomatoes. Other varieties include the Philly cheesesteak, shrimp scampi, chicken fajita, meatball and provolone, and eggplant parmigiana.

We tried the the Thai peanut chicken. It boasted a creamy, nutty sauce, moist chicken, and flaky dough. This empanada was a real standout.

Sweet pies are available in many flavors, such as dulce de leche and blackberries, guava and cream cheese, and Nutella and banana. The last succeeded with a classic flavor combination that everybody loves.

Go-Go is a healthful, affordable option in South Beach for fresh soups, mini or big salads, and sweet or savory empanadas.
