The weather stinks today. Almost a hurricane. Who said just because the power is out you need to scrimp? In the event of a hurricane-caused power outage, one can only eat so much tuna or canned beans. And we don't even want to bother trying cheeseburgers, sandwiches, (AKA candwiches), or whole chickens in cans. Here are some mostly canned treats to eat when you're bored out of your mind, starving, and tired of rain and no AC.
Rougie Duck Confit
This can comes with six to eight duck legs packed with fat and salt. It has a shelf life of four years at room temperature (before opening). There's only one problem: You'll need some heat to warm this up, so a gas stove or grill is needed. And you'll need to eat it all in one sitting (smaller cans are available).
Bizac Block of Foie Gras
Slap this onto some bread and watch it rain. It can be stored at room temperature, but keep it in the fridge -- that way, it's ready to eat chilled before you're left with no refrigeration.
Hand-packed with no preservatives, eat this octopus in olive oil from Galicia straight out of the can.
Chanterelle mushrooms
Tasty French mushrooms in a can. Heat them or eat them cold. They'll make a nice side dish to one of your other canned goods.
Sea Urchin Pate
How about a uni sandwich à la Michelle Bernstein? OK, so maybe you'll have to toast the bread on the grill, but close enough.
