David's Cafe II likely to leave Lincoln Road.

Time to get one last cafecito for the road, because David's Café II will close its doors at the end of the week.

Owner Adrian Gonzalez told Short Order that the iconic Lincoln Road fixture, which serves much-needed shots of liquid adrenaline along with authentic Cuban cuisine, is closing the Lincoln Road location for good at the end of the week in yet another case of small independent restaurant owners being squeezed out by high rents.

Gonzalez said the rent option on the space was up for renewal and he simply couldn't justify the high prices of operating near Lincoln Road. "It's unfortunate, but there comes a time when you have to make a decision."

Gonzalez wasn't sure whether David's would close on July 22 at night or early July 23. In any event, there will be no parties, no blowout celebrations. Just a few last coladas and pastelitos among friends.

What's next for Gonzalez and David's? "We'll take a break and focus our attention on David's on Collins Avenue. Then, who knows? We have started looking at some spaces, but for now, it's time to regroup."

The restaurant has issued this statement to friends and family:

"On behalf of the David's Café Family, we would like to thank our loyal customers, family and friends because without all of you, this dream would not have been possible.

After 19 years at this location our time has come to an end. On July 22nd, 2012 we will regretfully be closing our doors for good to end an amazing chapter on Lincoln Road.

The David's Café Family will continue to bring you the same quality Cuban favorites at our original location, 1058 Collins Avenue, where the dream began 35 years ago.

Owned and operated by the Gonzalez Family, our doors are open 24 hours a day and we would love for you to join us as we look towards the future.

Be on the look out for more David's Café's coming in the near future."
