The awards ceremony, held on Saturday, July 19, at the Sheraton Hotel New Orleans, takes place during the five-day spirits festival and celebrates excellence in the art of mixology both in the United States and internationally, with 23 categories that include American Bartender of the Year; Best New Product; Best Cocktail & Spirits Publication; Best Bar Mentor, and Best American Hotel Bar.
South Beach's The Regent Cocktail Club is a triple threat with three nominations. John Lermayer was nominated for American Bartender of the Year, while the entire staff was given a nod for Best American Bar Team. In addition, the Regent is a nominee in the Best American Hotel Bar category.
The Broken Shaker is also a nominee in the Best American Hotel Bar category.
Broken Shaker's Gabe Orta said that "it is an honor to be nominated alongside our peers in the industry. Tales is the best event of the year, and we are humbled and grateful for this nomination."
On June 6, the field will get smaller, with each category whittled down to four finalists each. Of those four, the bar or person with the highest number of points, determined by a panel of judges, will be the winner.
Both Orta and partner, Elad Zvi, will be attending Tales of the Cocktail, where they will host Broken Shaker House, a pop-up serving barbecue and frozen cocktails poolside at the official headquarters of Tales of the Cocktail, the Hotel Monteleone in the French Quarter.
