Broken Shaker Ranked Number 14 of World's 50 Best Bars

Broken Shaker's Gabriel Orta and Elad Zvi are in London celebrating their place at the top.

Two months ago, Orta and Zvi learned that their bar would be ranked on the list of world's 50 best for a second year, but they still had to wait to find out just where Broken Shaker would rank. Yesterday evening, the placings were announced at an awards ceremony at Christ Church Spitalfields in East London. 

Broken Shaker ranks number 14 in the world's best bars, moving up from their 22nd position in 2014. 

Artesian in London made the number one spot, with New York's the Dead Rabbit named the best bar in America and number two in the world. In fact, just three bars in the U.S. outranked Broken Shaker — all of them in New York City. Employees Only was named number four on the list and Attaboy made the number 11 spot. 

The World's 50 Best Bars list holds extra weight because each bar and lounge is voted onto the list by an academy of 400 of the leading names in the global bar industry, including Tony Abou-Ganim, Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, Dave Broom, Camper English, Francesco LaFranconi, and Alan McGillivray.

Each academy member votes for his favorite bars based on personal experiences. Though there are no formal judging parameters, voters cannot have an interest in the bars they vote for and must have visited the bar in the past two years. All votes are anonymous, and all bars — be they formal hotel lounges or kitschy tiki bars — are eligible. 

The Broken Shaker, which started out as a little pop-up bar experiment, has turned into a major force in the cocktail industry, with the "little bar that could" being named Best Hotel Bar in America at this year's Tales of the Cocktail's Spirited Awards. Partner Elad Zvi is both pleased and humbled at the bar's latest achievement, saying, "We want to say thank you so much to the people in Miami. We couldn't done it without them. And, of course, thank you so much for everyone at the Shaker/27 family from the dishwasher to the manager."

The duo is still in London, but when they return they'll have no time to rest on their laurels. Orta and Zvi's next projects include taking over the management of Miami's beloved Magnum Lounge and designing the cocktail program for District Brew House on board the Norwegian Escape, which begins sailing from her home, Port of Miami, next month.
