One made carabales cheese and walnut empanadas with pear compote.  Another, grilled Florida grouper with "bean escabeche" and buñuelos.  There was barbeque quail salad with poached egg and passion fruit vinaigrette.  Down Island French Toast with foie gras, brioche, and curaçao melted in mouths.  The smoked Scottish salmon on warm sweet bread with potato hash, crème fraîche, caviar, and horshradish oil would not be overlooked.  A spread totaling 14 dishes unfolded for a "Tropical Tribute for Julia Child at The Kampong" on November 15, 1992, which begs the question: Where are the corn pecan waffles with homemade chorizo and tropical syrup nowadays when you need 'em?!

Be the first to correctly identify in the comment thread five of the pictured chefs behind these old school yet so ahead of their time tasty bites, and win a Julie & Julia prize pack with apron, a copy of "My Life in France," book light and a pass for two to tonight's private advance screening.  You might get extra credit for naming the token winemaker.  7:30 p.m., AMC Sunset Place 24, 5701 Sunset Dr., South Miami.
