69. Truffle Artichoke Soup at Villa Mayfair
The scent of truffles hits immediately, long skinny black shavings adorn as well as infuse the truffle artichoke soup ($17) at Villa Mayfair. Served with a puffy wild mushroom brioche that has layers of butter and nuggets of shrooms buried within; it's the brioche that really tips the scale on the dish, taking it from delicious to divine (simply because the soup is so damn good that without a piece of something to scape up every last bit, we would have been disappointed).
The base has such a creamy richness and a smooth silky texture, it's hard to believe there's no magic dust in there. This soup catapults the artichoke from average vegetable to thorny thistle superhero. They drizzle a smattering of truffle oil on top, just in case you were not already overloaded on umami, and the portion size is almost too much to consume on your own. It's dense, extremely filling, but also extremely satisfying, both physically and emotionally. It's a fancy version of feel good food.
