43. Ackee Empanadas at Vegetarian Restaurant by Hakin
Hakin Hill, the laid-back and dreadlocked owner of this all-vegan restaurant in Sunny Isles, calls these yummy vegan empanadas ($3.99) "pasties." We jaded Miamians usually think of adhesive nipple coverings when we hear that word, but let's not get distracted by semantic squabbles -- the name is secondary to the deliciousness.
These savory pies are filled with ackee (the national fruit of Jamaica, which has a scrambled-egg-like appearance and taste) and a thick, creamy blend of carrots, peas, and corn that culminates in a potpie-like flavor when paired with the buttery whole-wheat crust (of course it's not made with real butter, but we think most people would be fooled). They're surprisingly dense and filling -- one will definitely do the trick as an appetizer or a snack on the go. Other flavor choices include spinach ($2.50), original soya chunk, and curried seitan ($3), but the restaurant's offerings change daily, so check about the fillings du jour, and bon appétit, mon.
