So perhaps it's worth noting Republican frontrunner Donald Trump says he's open to giving a spot to Rubio in his theoretical administration. Perhaps even as VP.
"Yes. I like Marco Rubio. Yeah. I could,” Trump replied when USA Today asked if he could imagine appointing Rubio to a post.
Trump even left the door open to a possible Trump-Rubio ticket.
"There are people I have in mind in terms of vice president. I just haven’t told anybody names," he said. "I do like Marco. I do like [John] Kasich… I like [Scott] Walker actually in a lot of ways. I hit him very hard... But I’ve always liked him. There are people I like, but I don’t think they like me because I have hit them hard.”
Trump appears to hold no hard feelings over Rubio's attack about his tiny, tiny hands either.
“He became Don Rickles for about four days, and then I became worse than Don Rickles,” Trump said.
Rubio has kept a mostly low profile since exiting the presidential race last month but, by all indications, remains firmly in the #NeverTrump camp. Rubio is even holding onto his delegates as a possible way to block Trump's nomination at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July. Heck, there are even some rumors Rubio might even try to finagle the nomination for himself at the convention.
It's far-fetched, but given the poll numbers, it's also pretty far-fetched to believe Trump would win and have an administration to staff in the first place.
Perhaps that's why Trump is trying to walk back some of his attacks on Rubio.
He's in a fight against that so-called Republican establishment to win the nomination, but if he wants a chance at the presidency, he'll need that same establishment to coalesce around him strongly in the general election.
So it's no surprise he's cleaning up some of his attacks on establishment faves such as Rubio,
