The South Florida Twitter community is as varied here as types of palm trees. They might all look the same, but they're not.

Twitter, the social networking and conversation tool that has changed the way people communicate all over the world, is particularly buzzing here in the tri-county area with all kinds of legit, real people who are interesting to follow -- folks ranging from geeks to single moms to pundits and everything in between.

These twitterers are not only creating a brave new world online, but also changing the way people meet and interact. There are so many Twitter meetups these days, that even the most dedicated social butterfly can barely keep up. If Paris Hilton lived in Miami, she'd probably skip a few "tweetups" and stay home for beauty sleep!

Stuff happens when you vocalize on Twitter -- and in a good way. Just a few months ago, yours truly tweeted that she wanted to see an Annie Leibowitz-style photo of all her favorite Twitter people, decked out half-naked in sheets. She imagined a classic, elegant black and white spread a la Vanity Fair cover. Photographer and active twitterer Ray Medina "listened" and stepped up to the plate with a Twitter calendar idea.

And so the 2010 South Florida Twitter Calendar was born. As a one-of-a-kind grassroots project, the calendar will showcase the area's social media community. It's a welcome breath of fresh air after you have Bravo, for example, representing the 305 with shows like Miami Social.

We don't want posers or hotties on this calendar, we want real people who use social media to entertain, engage and do good things for the community while they tweet their asses off all day. We don't care what you look like, we care about what you do and how you use Twitter to do it. (But, hey, if you happen to be a hunk or bombshell who hangs out the Gansevoort South, no problem, as long as you give good Twitter.) All South Florida Twitter people between Lake Okeechobee and the Keys, the Atlantic and the Gulf, are welcome to apply. Stay away if you are a soapbox account or a spammer.

Five percent of proceeds from calendar sales will benefit the American Cancer Society. A calendar launch event is in the works for the December holidays, with full proceeds going to the charity.

The rules are simple: the first sixty people to apply will be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each twitterer will be featured in their birth month with others sharing the same. It's easy to apply, just email your name, Twitter handle and brief bio (100 words or less) to twitcalendarsf [at] gmail [dot] com.

The deadline for applications has been extended to September 21. For more information and details, visit South Florida Twitter Calendar. For updates, follow @twitcalendarsf.
