Despite public votes of confidence, Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano's job is likely in danger. Though, if the Dolphins do fire Sparano they better make sure they bring in someone better to replace him. Looks like one of the leading buzzed-about candidates isn't likely to want the job. A report from a source close to former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, posted on NFL.com, claims that despite previous rumors he probably wouldn't be interested the job. The reason: He doesn't want to have to deal with general manager Jeff Ireland. Who can blame him?
After a four year hiatus from the sidelines, Cowher is rumored to be interested to get back in the game. The Dolphins emerged as one of the top teams Cowher was interested in. Though, if he returned, Cowher would want complete control over the team.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross may or may not be ready to axe Sparano, but apparently Ireland's job is on safer ground. (Even after he asked the stupidest question of a possible draft pick in the history of the NFL.) Cowher would want to bring in his own staff.
Reports NFL.com:
Cowher, along with commanding a salary in the $7 million-to-$8 million range, would want his own personnel staff, meaning sweeping changes to the football-operations side of the organization -- in essence, clearing out those brought in previously by Bill Parcells.Would that be a huge lose? Well, as we've already pointed out no coach in NFL history has ever won Super Bowls with two different teams, and in the post-Shula era the 'Fins have brought in a number of high profile coaches who have fallen flat on their face.
Those close to Cowher don't expect him to move forward with the Dolphins unless the parameters of the job substantially change.
Plus, our resident Fins expert Chris Joseph seems high on the idea of landing Stanford Coach Jim Harbaugh. His team is playing at Sun Life Stadium tonight. Maybe Harbaugh should take a close look around and see if he likes the place.
