This past June, singer Paulina Rubio was involved in a fender-bender in Little Havana and then found herself arrested after she screamed, "All of you Miami cops are abusive," at police officers who had arrived on the scene. Now a judge has ordered Rubio to face trial on charges of obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct, and refusal to obey a lawful command.
Rubio's BMW hit another car June 25 in Little Havana. Police officers showed up to conduct a routine investigation, but Rubio allegedly began acting erratically. She even refused to get out of her car when an officer asked her to, and then screamed the line about "all of you Miami cops."
"Help! Help! I didn't do anything! Look what they're doing! Help! Abusers! You bunch of liars! Help!" she yelled, according to the arrest report.
She continued screaming even after being handcuffed. However, she eventually calmed down, apologized, and was allowed to leave because she claimed she had to get home to breastfeed her young son.
According to Fox News Latino, Judge Steven Leifman has set Rubio's trial date for September 14. However, she might still be able to avoid trial.
"This morning there was a hearing and the case was scheduled for trial in September, but perhaps some kind of negotiation can take place between now and then because the charges against her are minor infractions and she has no criminal record," said Teresita Chavez, spokeswoman for the State Attorney's Office.
If the trial does go forth and Rubio is convicted, she could face up-to 60 days in jail for the first two charges, and the "refusal to obey" charges carry a maximum sentence of 364 days in jail. However, jail time seems unlikely for Rubio.
"But that will not occur because the lady has no criminal record and I know that something can be arranged in her case," Chavez said.
