Today marks exactly three years since George Zimmerman fired the shots that killed Miami Garden teenager Trayvon Martin up in Sanford, Florida. It's already been a tense week in regarded to the remembrance of the case. The U.S. Justice Department announced on Tuesday that it had closed its investigation and will not charge Zimmerman with any wrongdoing.
In an interview with the Associated Press last night, Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, says that she now believes that Zimmerman got away with murder.
"He took a life, carelessly and recklessly, and he shouldn't deserve to have his entire life walking around on the street free," Fulton told the newswire. "I just believe that he should be held accountable for what he's done."
"The Justice Department is the top of the line here," she continued. "But what they found just wasn't enough."
The JOD apparently concluded that it could not find enough strong evidence to file hate-crime charges against Zimmerman. The decision follows Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal on second-degree murder charges.
Fulton's comments follows an official statement from the Trayvon Martin Foundation.
"Although we are disappointed in the Government findings, we remain poised to do everything in our power to make sure that senseless violence is eradicated and no parent or community has to go through what we've had to endure on a daily basis," said Foundation President Troy E. Wright. "The Trayvon Martin Foundation is dedicated to finding solutions to social injustice, protecting our youth, and empowering those who demand justice and peace."
The third annual We Remember Trayvon peace walk already took place on February 15 at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens. Fulton is expected to mark the day with a private remembrance dinner. It appears that no other major remembrances are scheduled in Miami today.
Interestingly the anniversary also comes as citizens in Miami Gardens are mourning the death of another young man, mental handicapped 25-year-old Lavall Hill, who was shot by police for brandishing a broom stick. Yesterday protestors interrupted a city commission meeting.
Still, several are marking the anniversary of the tragedy on Twitter.
