Marlins rookie outfielder Mike Stanton was named NL Player of the Week. He was given the honor after bludgeoning the Nationals and Reds collective pitching staffs last week using only his bat and his boyish good looks. Stanton collected a total of eight hits and six RBI in a three-game series against Washington, including going five-for-five in one game. In all, he hit four home runs and five doubles, scored five runs, and got eight RBI in six games played. That's Stantastic!

The 20-year-old Stanton became the second-youngest player in Major League history to finish with at least five hits and four RBI in a single game and joined Gary Sheffield, Miguel Cabrera, Chuck Carr, Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, and Juan Pierre as Marlins players who have recorded five-hit games.

"It's definitely a very cool award. It's a surprise for sure,'' said Stanton, who went 14 for 24 (.583) with four homers.

Badassedness and humility go hand in hand, apparently.

Stanton is proving night after night he'll be a star in this league, except without all the assholishness that usually accompanies star baseball players. The guy can hit, field, run, throw, and probably catch bullets with his teeth à la The Last Dragon. But it's his trademark humility and ability to shrug off weekly awards that takes him over-the-top. The guy isn't about accolades. He's about hard work, humility, and showing up every day with the right attitude. That, and mashing the shit out of baseballs.
