In what should be good news for the local tourism industry, Miami International Airport was the fastest growing major American airport in terms of passenger growth this year. That makes MIA the 12th busiest airport in the country with 38.3 million passengers passing through its gates last year.

MIA saw a 7.3 percent increase in travelers, according to an analysis by Anna.aero. That's the most of the top 20 airports in the country and the only to break six percent.

All in all, the top 20 airports in the country saw a modest passenger growth of 2.5 percent total between 2010 and 2011. Only two, Chicago O'Hare and Houston Bush, saw declines in passengers.
