Miamians are well known for their love of the coochie-cutter shorts. And if you've kept abreast of couture fashion this season, you've noticed our favorite short-shorts are gracing the runways of Milan and Paris. Biters!

Gen Art, an organization dedicated to promoting and supporting emerging talents, will again lend our city a sense of style legitimacy by kicking off FASHIONmiami this week in the Design District. With the opening of high-end clothing stores such as Marni and Y-3 in the surrounding blocks, it's fitting that Miami's fashion events are migrating from the Beach to the Design District.

FASHIONmiami is four days of runway shows at the former DesignMiami space (NE 39th Street and First Court, Miami). Wednesday night's Fresh Faces in Fashion show kicks off the festivities, where waifs, draped in Miami- and New York-based clothing lines, will flash blue steel as they trounce down the catwalk.

This year's Fresh Faces showcase will feature fashion and accessory newbies Romina Heighes, By Smith, Lialia Fernando Carneiro, Rella Jewelry, Babette Epaulette, and B. Rawlings. Alumni designer Duskin will make an appearance, and Hills starlet Whitney Port will debut her Whitney Eve line in Miami.

Gen Art's Fresh Faces runway shows have launched the careers of people you've probably heard of and wish you were wearing. There's Phillip Lim, who's designing sleep accessories for the Opening Ceremony label, the celeb-adored Zac Posen, and Project Runway alum and Miami gal Uli Herzner.

Catch Fresh Faces this Wednesday at 8 p.m. for a cocktail reception, runway show, and afterparty. Tickets cost $45 to $75, with discounts for Gen Art members. Call 212-255-7300 or visit genart.org. FASHIONmiami runs March 10-14.
