The Miami Marlins are continuing the spending spree and locking up their young guns. After offering a Giancarlo Stanton a 13-year, $325 million contract, the team has reportedly offered star pitcher Jose Hernandez a six-year, $40 million deal.
The Marlins have also recently made long-term offers to outfielder Christian Yelich and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, and outfielder Marcell Ozuna is rumored to be getting a similar deal soon.
It's a notable turnaround for a team that has historically traded away many of its young, promising players and a signal that the administration is no longer sticking to its fan-base-damaging business as usual.
According to CBS Sports, the deal would keep Hernandez in Miami until he's 30 and comes with two team options after that.
Fernandez in 2013 had one of the most notable rookie seasons for a pitcher in recent history. He took home the NL Rookie of the Year Award and finished third in Cy Young Award voting. However, Fernandez made only eight starts this past season before being sidelined by injury and undergoing Tommy John surgery.
But just because the Marlins are offering the deal doesn't mean Hernandez will take it. CBS notes that his agent, Scott Boras, prefers to keep his clients out of such long-term deals this early in their careers.
