Now, therefore I, Charlie Crist, Governor of the State of Florida, do hereby extend greetings and best wishes to all observing March 2008 as Florida Bicycle Month – Gov. Charlie Crist.
Thanks, Charlie – it’s a lot better than that State of the State crap last night.
Anyway, yes indeed: It’s Bike Month! And although we’re off to a slow start, the Bike Blog hopes to provide its loyal readers with an estupido – no, wait, we mean – ESTUPENDO! amount of content this month.
We’ll kick it off with a few upcoming events:
In honor of bike month, the Wallflower Gallery is hosting a Bicycle Film Fest this week, starting tonight and going through Friday.
The movies start at 7:00 and go to 10:30 (9:30 on Friday). Tonight’s line-up includes Contested Streets, a documentary about how New York largely gave up its streets to cars, and Beijing Bicycle, a movie about a young bike messenger in Beijing who loses his bike and has to kill a dude to get it back – something like that, anyway.
You can find the movie list here.
Emerge Miami’s Critical Mass will be having three rides this month– this Saturday’s ride meets at the South Miami Metrorail station, ten o'clock in the A.M. It is encouraged to ride with coffee sloshing around in one hand. The Saturday after, it's at the University of Miami Metrorail station, 10:00 again. They take a break the following week and then, on the 29th, they'll be meeting at Dadeland South to ride all the way to Florida City on the newly completed busway.
The Everglades Bike Club is hosting it’s annual Snowbird Century Ride – that’s a hundred miles, folks – on Sunday, March 30, 7:30 A.M., at Fruit and Spice Park, 24801 SW 187 Avenue. Homestead.
Last, March 8 is supposedly the internationally-agreed-upon World Naked Bike Ride day: last year, cops busted the event. We haven't heard anything about this year -- are the good times over? Anybody?
Coming up Soon: The Big Friggin’ Secret: Something good is coming to Miami bikers, supposedly, but nobody, apparently, will say what it is, exactly, but it’s really good, allegedly, but it’s a secret, or something.
