The affidavit says Alvarez's girlfriend visited his home Saturday to return his cat, though there's no explanation why she had the feline.
Afterward, the two got into a heated argument. Alvarez's girlfriend told police the former mayor grabbed her arms, pinned her against the wall of his building's parking garage, spit on her, and yelled profanities. The woman and her daughter said Alvarez had displayed a pattern of domestic violence beginning in 2013 and up to the present.
Parts of the report are redacted, including the location of the incident, but it does note that the woman had physical injuries consistent with her account of what happened. Alvarez turned himself
Alvarez was a career police officer who worked his way up to chief of the Miami-Dade Police Department, which he ran from 1997 to 2004. He was elected county mayor that year and again in 2008 but was recalled three years later over simmering anger about Marlins Park.
After his recall, Alvarez stayed out of politics and found a new way to occupy his time, by becoming an amateur bodybuilder.
As of this posting, the ex-mayor has not issued a statement about his arrest. Read the arrest report below:
