Marco Rubio is taking it from all sides this week. Today, LGBT activists are staging a sit-in at Rubio's Tampa office. Tomorrow, he'll face protests near the same office from Tea Partiers who claim his stance on immigration is too liberal and pro-immigration reform protestors who think his immigration bill is too conservative.
Yep, everybody hates Marco Rubio.
GetEQUAL, a national grassroots LGBT rights organization, claims its members will occupy Rubio's office until he declares his support for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. That bill would make it illegal to fire or not hire someone simply based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Rubio has previously announced his opposition to the bill, stating he's not for "any special protections based on orientation."
"Senator Rubio believes it's okay for me to be fired just because I am gay. As a resident of Florida and his constituent, I am ashamed of his position," said a group spokesman in a statement.
Starting at noon tomorrow however Rubio's Tampa office will also attract a completely different group of angry protestors: Tea Partiers. Yes, the same group that helped sweep him to victory in 2010 and heralded him as a potential presidential candidate. They believe Rubio's immigration bill has gone too far in giving amnesty to undocumented workers.
"As a result, Patriot groups are withdrawing their support for Senator Rubio and demand that he walk away from this bill," read a statement from three local activists according to The Buzz.
Oh, you thought that was all? Nope. Pro-immigration reform groups have also now announced a protest of their own outside Rubio's office at the same time.
"Come join members of Mi Familia Vota, Florida, clergy members, allies, and MoveOn, as we participate in a vigil at Senator Rubio's office to ask that he see the error of his ways regarding increased militarization, accepting campaign funds from GEO, an arm of ICE, and also adding English proficiency before undocumented Americans may be legal permanent residents," read a statement from those groups. "That's way before they would be eligible for citizenship. We will pray for him to do the right thing."
At this point is there anyone anywhere on the political spectrum not mad at Marco Rubio?
