For most people, putting out signs on Election Day means touting the politician of their choice. At Johnson Firearms in Wynwood, however, it means selling guns. But that's not to say there's nothing political about it.
"Ever since the second debate, when [Obama] mentioned the assault rifle ban, people have been coming in here and buying guns like crazy," said one Johnson Firearms employee who did not want to be quoted by name.
Gun sales have skyrocketed across the country in recent months. If Obama is re-elected tonight, it could even bigger business for Miami gun stores... and more firearms in a state already jam-packed with them.
According to the Wall Street Journal, some gun manufacturers have already seen a 30% increase in sales over last year. The trend seems to hold here in Miami.
"We're in the middle of a gun boom," said the Johnson Firearms employee. "Part of it's politics. Part of it is the whole 2012 Mayan/zombie apocalypse thing."
"You've got to be prepared," he added, smiling and pointing at a calendar with a picture of a zombie eating someone's brain. "And when you've got a guy like this, who hates guns and hates freedom, it's no surprise business is good."
But not everyone inside Johnson Firearms this afternoon came out of fear that an unrestrained Obama second term would steal their guns.
Raul Arcia was filling out the form to buy a brand new M5, a gun that looked like it belonged more in Halo 5 than in someone's actual house.
"Everyone should have a gun," he said, cradling the deadly, matte black beauty. "I'm just addicted to this shit."
