South Florida Representative and Democratic National Committee chief Debbie Wasserman Schultz is one of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords closest friends in the House. Giffords, who is still recovering after being shot in the head during a meeting with her constituents last year, offered her official resignation from Congress today in order to focus on her recovery.

Waserman Schultz read Giffords' letter of resignation in the House this morning and broke down in tears.

"I am so proud of my friend," Wasserman Schultz said. "It will always be one of the great treasures of my life to have met Gabby Giffords and to have served with her in this body."

"Even though I know we won't see each other every day," the congresswoman concluded before reading Giffords' letter, "we will be friends for life."
