All kinds of end-of-the-week news on the Bike Blog.
First off, if you’re peddling around South Beach this weekend you might notice a new bike lane on 16th street. It’s been there just a week or so, according to Miami Beach Transportation Coordinator Christine Leduc. The Bike Blog went out to ride the new lane yesterday, and – lo, and behold! – it’s pretty good: there are actually two lanes, one on each side of the street; both are spacious, well-marked, and go more or less from Alton to Collins. They’re even marked by brand new road signs that say ‘Bike Lane.’ Leduc says that another new lane, running along Prairie Avenue from 28th street to 42nd street should be striped within a month or so.
Even more exciting – potentially, anyway – is the upcoming approval vote for the Miami Beach Bicycle Master Plan, which spells out a slew of existing, in-progress, and desired bike accommodations on the Beach, and would provide a kind of guiding vision for future plans – “We want to have a continuous network of trails,” says Leduc, mentioning North Beach as one of the next targets for bike lanes.
Not bad, huh? The Bike Blog might have to move north with the bike lanes and start harassing North Bay Village until they get a bike lane across the JFK Causeway.
The Miami Beach Bicycle Master Plan is expected to come before the Neighborhood Affairs Committee on September 19, and the Planning Commission on September 25. Meanwhile, the City of Miami is . . . well, no bicyclists died this week, to my knowledge.
But in Coral Gables, apparently one guy used a bicycle to rob a convenience store.

Events:
- For those inclined towards safety, Miami Beach’s police-accompanied community bike ride is this Saturday. They meet at 9:00 A.M. (woof – is the sun even up at that ungodly hour? I mean, on a Saturday?) at 601 5th Street for a two-hour ride.
- On the other side of the Bay, Critical Mass has a ride this Saturday morning. The group meets at 10:00 at the University Metrorail Station for a ride through the Gables.
- Local anarcho-biketavist Kevin Gonzales is hosting an “Allapatah Freegan Ride” this Saturday. His homemade tour, he says, will show “where you can get free food, free furniture, live for free like I do. I don’t pay for food or nothing like that.” Sounds like fun, no? Meet at the Allapatah Metrorail at 5:00 P.M.
