Last night, a suspicious item located in the luggage of a Texas man caused four concourses at Miami International Airport to be evacuated as the bomb squad came into investigate. Now it appears the item was merely a metal canister, and the man was a 70-year-old scientist traveling to Puerto Rico.
TSA workers found what they thought to be a suspicious item in the mans luggage at about 9:30 last night. As a precautionary measure concourses E, F, G and H along with the airport's hotel were evacuated. Several roadways were closed down, and traffic through the airport was brought to a slow crawl.
Now it appears that there was never any threat. The suspicious canister has tested negative for explosive. The 70-year-old scientist, who remains unidentified, has fully cooperated with the investigation and is not under arrest.
Only about 150 people were in the terminals at the time. Several flights were diverted to other terminals until the evacuated areas were re-open at 4:30 this morning.
