Marco Rubio may be delivering the Republican response to Barack Obama's State of the Union speech tonight, but he won't be the only local face you'll see on TV. Desiline Victor, age 102, has been chosen to sit with First Lady Michelle Obama during the proceedings.
Victor, a Haitian immigrant and resident of North Miami Beach, waited in line three hours during the first day of early voting, and poll workers eventually advised her to come back. She returned that night and finally cast her ballot.
"I'm very happy, very proud," Victor told the Washington Post through a translator.
Victor came to American in 1989 and toiled as a farm worker in Belle Glade. She became a naturalized citizen in 2005.
Victor's story was brought to the attention of the White House by the Advancement Project, a civil rights group, and her attendance is likely a sign that the president will mention voters' rights, and perhaps the long lines in Miami-Dade and throughout Florida during November's elections, in his speech.
