The Ten Best Vinyl Releases You Can Buy at Sweat This Record Store Day

The reemergence of the record was as unlikely a revival as the world has ever seen. And Record Store Day has played a big part in the resurrection. Held this year on April 16, RSD is the celebration vinyl deserves.

There's live music (Shabazz Palaces headlines this year's festivities at Sweat), giveaways, and, perhaps most exciting, independent record stores the world over — from Miami's Sweat Records to Fort Lauderdale's Radio-Active Records and We Got the Beats — have the exclusive right to sell limited-edition albums not available on Amazon or any other virtual store. We pored over the list of records released this Record Store Day and found ten selections that are worth waking up early (like, really early) and fighting for.

10. Madonna: Like a Virgin and Other Hits
Originally released in 1984 as a Japanese EP, this will be pressed pretty in pink with its original Japanese lettering. Madonna's longtime producer, Jellybean Benitez, remixes Madge dance classics like "Lucky Star," "Borderline," and "Like a Virgin."

9. Chvrches, Every Open Eye Remix EP
The Scottish synth trio present a completely remixed version of last year's EP, Every Open Eye, with each track reworked by a different producer. Collaborators include Four Tet, Goldroom, Big Wild, KDA, Gryffin, and Whyt Noyz.

8. J Dilla, The Diary
The late rapper, whose life has been honored the past two years in Miami with a celebratory festival, will have this lost album released for the first time. The Diary was uncovered on a two-inch tape right after J Dilla passed away in 2006. The tracks Dilla had not yet mixed were finished by engineer Dave Cooley using original demo mixes as a guide.

7. Lush, Origami
Sweat Records' Lauren Reskin pointed to this box set as the Record Store Day release she was most looking forward to. The British shoegazers are having all five of their records released on vinyl for the first time in decades, pressed on clear, silver, red, pink, and yellow vinyl and housed in one beautiful box. But just in case you forgot that we're in the 21st Century, it also comes with a download album of previously unheard home demos from Lush.

6. Metallica, Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, Metallica!
As a benefit for Fondation de France's Give for France, the heavy-metal superstars are releasing a recording of their 2003 performance at Le Bataclan, the theater where 89 people were killed during the November 2015 terror attacks.




5. Fleetwood Mac, The Alternate Tusk
The unfairly maligned double album follow-up to Rumours by the pop-rock legends will be released with alternate mixes from the 1979 recording sessions pressed on 180-gram black vinyl packaged in a deluxe box set.

4. The Weeknd, The Hills Remixes  
Just 4,000 copies are being released of remixes of the Canadian singer's hit song "The Hills." Side A of the 12-inch features Eminem, while the B side features Nicki Minaj.

3. Various Artists, Judgment Night (Soundtrack)
Perhaps only people who came of age in the '90s can fully appreciate this soundtrack from a completely forgettable movie being released on colored vinyl for the first time. Judgment Night's accompanying soundtrack had the gimmick of mixing hip-hop acts with rock bands at a time when that seemed like a novelty. The highlights include Cypress Hill working with both Sonic Youth and Pearl Jam and De La Soul rapping over Teenage Fanclub's instrumentation to create the masterpiece "Fallin.'"

2. Various Artists, Disney Favorite Songs 12-Inch 
This could be the best financial investment you can make this Record Store Day. This 12-inch collection of songs from Disney movies features tracks from animated classics like Pinocchio's "When You Wish Upon a Star" to Frozen's "Let It Go." Don't buy a copy for your kids, as tempted as you might be. With a limited print run of 5,000 copies, all the deep-pocketed Disney fanatics out there will be drooling to scoop a mint copy off your hands on the resale market. This album could send that little brat to college.

1. David Bowie, The Man Who Sold the World, TVC15, and I Dig Everything — The Pye Singles 1966
The recently fallen Ziggy Stardust will be well-represented this year. Bowie's earliest singles will be released on one record, The Man Who Sold the World. Fans can also nab a seven-inch single, featuring "TVC15" on the A-side and the Harry Maslen mix of "Wild Is the Wind" on the B-side. Trust us, you need this in your collection.
