Fast forward to 2010 and Anjuli Stars is still singing like an angel and doing shows all around the city - including a recent performance at Karma Lounge, backed by a live band. The same band that plays back-up for Ky-Mani Marley. The reggae roots of the band makes sense for Anjuli as her new album will have a primarily hip-hop and reggae influence. There's no word on the actual date of release, but she did unleash a teaser track to give us an idea of what to expect from it.
The song is called "Paper" and its done over the "Jamrock" riddim made famous by another Marley brother: Damian "Jr. Gong." Marley. Anjuli interprets the instrumental by getting into a tale of a man who seemingly lives the street life to make his living and provide for his family. A predicament where danger looms at every corner and at any moment either drugs, a squad car or a bullet can put an end to it all. And caught in the middle of the known and the unknown, Anjuli sings, "so I get on my knees, pray to the lord, bring him back home to me / And the lord replies, leave him behind, cuz his soul is sold to the streets."
"Paper" is just a glimpse into the talent that is Anjuli Stars. With a fusion of hip-hop and reggae sounds behind her sultry voice, you can expect a lot of soulful melodies and songs that will be incredibly to see performed live. Listen and download the song below.
