Only in America will you get sneakers and "Pu$$y" for $20. And only an Australian dude can make it happen.
A decade ago, Aussie Peter Fahey embarked on a mission to combine two of his passions -- footwear and music. The result: The Sneaker Pimp Tour, a mishmash of "limited, rare, exclusive, and custom kicks" coupled with "live hip-hop performances" and the chance to buy, sell, and trade some of the "dopest sneakers" and "Illest" streetwear on the market.
To commemorate its tenth anniversary, Sneaker Pimps has teamed with Iggy Azalea, Ace Hood, and several up-and-coming artists for a U.S. Tour scheduled to stop at Grand Central on Friday, August 24.
In short, the Sneaker Pimps Tour is to sneakerheads what Comic-Con is to geeks. It's a safe place where athletic footwear aficionados can swoon over special-edition Chucks and drop serious coinage on custom Nikes.
Early this year, a collector bid $93,000 on eBay for a limited-edition pair of the Kanye West-designed Nike Air Yeezy II sneakers. Just one year earlier, a set of Air Jordan Silver Shoes was being sold for a cool $60,000.
That's serious baller money when you consider that Ace Hood only drops about $20,000 at strip clubs. But as the rapper told us in May, "Sometimes I think, 'Damn, I just really blew like $20,000 on this and that.' But it's all within the profession. It's all within a lifestyle at the end of the day."
