Have you checked out the Tuesday night party Jazz at Jazid? It's a novel-again concept for the club, which began as a jazz-centric venue but in recent years has expanded its musical offerings far beyond those limits. Not that I'm complaining about the many frequent offerings of non-jazz jamming that goes down there, courtesy of acts like Xperimento, Suenalo, and Locos Por Juana. But a bit of jazz back at Jazid is a very good thing, and better still when served up by a virtuoso like Silvano Monasterios, who New Times named Best Jazz Musician in last year's Best Of Miami issue.
The Venezuela-born pianist went pro at the age of 18 and first treated fans in the 305 to his mastery when he visited in 1989 for the Miami Jazz Festival. Two years later he became a local when he accepted a scholarship from the U, where he went on to earn his B.A.
Monasterios' resume is extensive, boasting performances with artists ranging from Arturo Sandoval to Shakira to David Lee Roth. But jazz is clearly the man's passion, and you can enjoy it at Jazid tomorrow night for free, plus enjoy a two-for-one special on all shots!
