Metal's leading weirdo luminary, Maynard James Keenan, is coming to the Gusman Center this week. He won't be with Tool or A Perfect Circle. He'll be with Puscifer, his supremely strange music and comedy project.
So what is Puscifer? "It will be appropriate to its setting," Maynard says. "I wouldn't want to watch the new Star Trek movie at a rock club. And I wouldn't try to cook a meal in a rock club either. But I'm definitely not going to try to play a rock set in a restaurant."
OK, but the Gusman is known for hosting operas and ballets, while Puscifer has an album called V Is for Vagina. So again, what is Puscifer? "Expectations pave the road to Hell," Keenan responds cryptically. "If you've trusted my choices and judgment in the past and if you come with an open mind, you'll be entertained. If you come with something specific in mind, you're not going to get it."
But how do we prepare for the unknown? "Take a deep breath. Be present. If you get too fucked-up to enjoy the show, you'll miss the details. Put your fucking flash cameras away. Wear whatever, but if you really want to get in the mood, wear a suit."
Well, if Maynard won't tell you, we will: Puscifer is an odd, surreal trip to an alternate universe alongside a man who's probably from another universe. Expect lots of costumes, deranged films, and totally wacko music.
