In honor of this long-ago inking, Ink plays host to DJ Theodore, a resident spinner at the superposh Akrotiri night club, which is situated on the beach of Kosmas in Athens, Greece. A state-of-the-art house music guy, Theodore compiled two Akrotiri - Various Artists mix releases in 2003 and 2004, which were picked up internationally by Sony Music. He is also the producer of the hit "Ride to Athens," which was composed for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
Theodore is no stranger to American clubs. He's spun up north quite a bit, playing hotspots such as Mantra in Boston and Quo in Manhattan — and an annual staple of his is the Winter Music Conference. "I love the vibe of Miami," he says. "The people come here to have real fun and you can see it all around, on the streets, on the beach, at the clubs, everywhere."
Akrotiri isn't his only home. He has a residency at Baraonda, also in Athens, as well as the Circus Club in Larnaca, Cyprus. He's pretty much the big game in town in his homeland, playing private parties for the likes of Paris Hilton and her minions.
When asked about the DJ scene in Greece, he says it's big business, regardless of the size of the country. "I think that happens because the people here — foreigners and residents — are used to going out every single night, bringing the competition between the people involved in the business to a very high level," he says. "Greece has some of the best clubs in the world, and the competition in clubbing comes down to the DJs, so they try harder."
Theodore's main opener tonight, DJ Dino G., has a thing for thumping, progressive beats. He's a resident at Spybar in Chicago, a small but explosive club that's a favorite of Windy City locals.
